Origami Workshop Day
The word is out! Yes – our reception is going to be 100% self-catered. Every time we’ve mentioned it, we’ve had responses ranging from:
“Are you INSANE?” to… “Awesome! How can I help?”
Actually – it’s funny you ask.
UPDATED – we are now purely concentrating on the Crane-Folding as the paper just arrived the other day so we are a few weeks behind schedule! The date has also changed – see below!
Gyoza
Most of the food is covered – thanks largely to the catering prowess of the Magees (seriously – you will RSVP purely for the dessert buffet – trust us) – however we have a rather large task ahead of us in the form of Japanese pork dumplings (otherwise known as Gyoza).
Those of you who have been lucky enough to visit when we’ve made Gyoza from scratch will vouch for the hands-down yumminess contained inside these little bundles of what can only be described as dumpling HEAVEN. However as we are catering for 50+ – you can imagine, we have quite a job ahead of us.
Check out the recipe (complete with folding instructions) here!
Now – we’re going to make the filling ahead of time – and we’re BUYING the wrappers (not hand-rolling them because we’d still be here on New Year’s Eve) – but we need a hand wrapping them. They’re not hard – just fold, pinch and pleat, then repeat. Easy!
Easy – yes, but also very time consuming!
Part 2 involves more folding – but paper, rather than pastry wrappers. That’s right – we’re aiming to make 1000 cranes for this party.
ONE-THOUSAND.
Sembazuru
The task of folding a thousand origami paper cranes by hand is called “sembazuru.” According to the lore of origami, anyone who successfully completes a sembazuru has earned the right to a single wish. The wish could be for healing or good luck, for example, but in the context of a wedding, the wish is for a long and happy marriage. The person undertaking a sembazuru is not traditionally expected to do it alone. Not only can friends and relatives assist, it is considered luckier if they do.
So we would love nothing better than for our friends to drop by and help us with this momentous task. We’ll teach you how to fold them on practice paper (we’ll even let you take those ones home if you like!).
Children’s Peace Monument
After the reception, we are boxing these up and donating them to the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima. We both visited this breathtaking monument back in 2008 and left our own personal messages of peace (you can actually check out what we wrote on this website – so cool!).

So not only will you be blessing our marriage with your love and friendship – you will also be pledging your allegiance to world peace, which will be displayed publicly in one of the most famous monuments to peace in the world.
If you’d like to be included in this day – maybe just to learn a new skill, hang out with some great people, or just HELP US (eeeek!) – we would be so incredibly honoured – and we will ensure that you get a special thank you at the reception.
At this stage, we’re looking at holding this on Saturday the 28th of July (but will consider rescheduling if it doesn’t suit the majority).
Gyoza & Origami Workshop Day
Date: Sunday 29th July
Time: 9am – 5pm (come for the day or for a few hours – up to you!)
Where: Ezz & Stephen’s place (email us for the address if you don’t have it!)
RSVP: Email findus@ezzandstephen.com and let us know before the day if you can.
Children: If they have the dexterity for origami folding, can sleep in a portacot upstairs or play quietly with Gypsy outside – they are more than welcome. Unfortunately the TV will be off-limits due to both the lounge and dining rooms being in use – so just keep that in mind.
Can’t wait to see you there! xo
